Read More About Life After Death!
A person is said to die, yet still they do not; they are only separated from the material body which served them for use in the world but can no longer be of any use to them. For the person (him or herself) lives. He is said to live because a person is not a human being from the body, but from the spirit; for it is the spirit that thinks in the person; and the thought with the affection which makes the spirit, also makes the person. Hence it is when someone dies, they only pass from one world to another. (Heaven and Hell - 445)
What we learn, come to value as true, and then choose determines our life's path. In the New Church, we have some unique values that form the basis of our spiritual perspective. Some examples include:
- Our understanding of Christianity in the New Church is that how you live is what determines the measure of your faith, not what you profess to believe.
- God is never angry, and never stops loving us; the lessons we learn from the choices we make determine how much we sense and respond to that love.
- There is One loving God who is the Lord Jesus Christ - "Father, Son and Holy Spirit" are God's soul, body and activity, so the trinity is a unity.
- Every person is rescued from selfishness (chooses heaven) who acknowledges God and lives well.
- We experience heavenly happiness by acting from love and by serving God and our neighbor - "being useful"
- The stories of the Bible have a deeper meaning which relate to our spiritual journey through life.
- Heaven is populated by people from this world who become angels by choosing to love and serve God and their neighbor during their lives on earth. They then inspire others in this world to do the same.
- The life of religion involves using the Lord’s Word to help us to overcome evil and choose good.
- Faith becomes genuine when it is joined with love and service toward God and our neighbor.
- True Married Love between a husband and wife lasts forever.
